Vehicle Fitment

  • 1998-1999 Mazda Miata Base (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 1999 Mazda Miata 10th Anniversary Edition (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2000-2005 Mazda Miata Base (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2000-2005 Mazda Miata LS (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2000-2003 Mazda Miata SE (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2003 Mazda Miata Shinsen (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2004-2005 Mazda Miata Mazdaspeed (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3 Turbocharged, RWD)

Fitment Notes

  • Front shock absorber - position is Front Left and Front Right. Sold individually (per shock); two units are required for a complete front axle replacement set.
  • Fits the second-generation Mazda Miata (NB platform, 1998-2005) in all trims, including the turbocharged 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed Miata. All North American NB Miatas use the 1.8L BP-Z3 engine; the Mazdaspeed variant adds a factory turbocharger.
  • Does not fit the first-generation Miata (NA platform, 1990-1997) - that generation uses different front shock mounting geometry and requires KONI part number 8041-1203SPORT. Does not fit the third-generation Miata (NC platform, 2006-2015).
  • The NB Miata uses a double-wishbone front suspension layout. This shock is engineered and valved specifically for that geometry and the NB's front spring rates across all trims.
  • Compatible with OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs up to 35 mm (approximately 1.4 in) of total drop.
  • Sold per shock - two front units required for a complete front axle installation. The companion rear shock for the NB Miata is sold separately.

Features

  • KONI Sport 8041 Series externally adjustable rebound damping - the adjustment knob at the top of the damper allows rebound to be tuned from full soft to full firm without removing the shock from the vehicle, providing convenient on-car adjustment to suit street, autocross, or track use.
  • Approximately 100% rebound adjustment range - up to three times the range of competing adjustable shock designs - accommodating both OEM spring rates and a wide variety of performance lowering springs without requiring a different unit.
  • Twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged damper construction specifically engineered for the NB Miata's double-wishbone front suspension, delivering improved road holding, front-end sharpness, and body motion control over OEM or worn replacement shocks.
  • Yellow-painted shock body - KONI Sport's iconic finish, and a long-established benchmark front shock upgrade within the Miata/MX-5 enthusiast community across all NB model years including the Mazdaspeed variant.
  • Significantly reduces front dive under braking, body roll in corners, and steering wander on undulating road surfaces - refining the NB Miata's already accomplished chassis dynamics into a sharper, more confidence-inspiring driving experience.
  • Equally effective on the turbocharged Mazdaspeed Miata (2004-2005), where the additional engine output and factory-lowered suspension benefit from the KONI Sport's wider adjustment range and improved damping consistency under spirited use.
  • Compatible with performance lowering springs, Ground Control coilover conversion kits, and other setups designed for the NB platform, allowing ride height adjustment over a wider range while retaining KONI's full external rebound adjustability.
  • Re-buildable and re-valvable - the shock can be serviced and returned to factory-equivalent performance after extended use, or re-valved for custom damping specifications for dedicated autocross, time attack, or track day builds.
  • Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.

Product Description

The KONI 8041-1251Sport is a yellow-painted, externally adjustable front shock absorber from KONI's Sport 8041 Series, engineered specifically for the second-generation Mazda Miata (NB platform, 1998-2005) in all North American trim levels. Coverage spans the full NB production run - from the base 1.8L roadster through the limited-edition Shinsen and SE packages all the way to the turbocharged 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed Miata - making this the single front shock solution for the entire NB generation. The shock is purpose-built for the NB's double-wishbone front suspension geometry, delivering improved front body control, reduced dive under braking, and sharper steering response compared to OEM or worn replacement dampers, while maintaining a ride quality level well-suited to daily street driving and weekend track use alike.

The external rebound adjustment knob allows the full ~100% tuning range to be accessed without removing the shock from the vehicle - from a soft, comfortable street setting to a firm, performance-oriented tune for autocross or track days. The twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged construction is calibrated specifically for the NB's spring rates and suspension travel, and the shock is fully compatible with performance lowering springs up to 35 mm of drop and Ground Control or coilover conversion setups for the NB platform. Among Miata enthusiasts and competitive autocross drivers, the KONI 8041-1251Sport has long been the reference front damper for the NB platform, consistently paired with Eibach or Ground Control springs as the foundation of a well-balanced, responsive suspension build.

This shock is sold individually - two units are required for a complete front axle installation. The companion rear shock for the NB Miata is sold separately. The 8041-1251Sport does not fit the first-generation NA Miata (1990-1997) or the third-generation NC Miata (2006-2015), both of which require separate KONI part numbers. The damper is re-buildable and re-valvable, extending its service life and enabling custom valving for dedicated competition builds. Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.
