Fitment Notes

  • Rear shock absorber - position is Rear Left and Rear Right. Sold individually (per shock); two units are required for a complete rear replacement set.
  • Fits all trim levels and engine variants of the Chevrolet Cobalt (2005-2010) and Pontiac G5 (2007-2009) on the GM Delta platform, including the Cobalt SS Supercharged and Cobalt SS Turbocharged variants.
  • The Pontiac G5 was sold as a coupe only in the United States market (2007-2009). Canadian market G5 Pursuit and G5 sedans share the same Delta platform rear suspension and are also supported.
  • Does not fit the Saturn Ion - although the Ion shares the Delta platform, it uses a different rear shock mounting configuration that is not compatible with this unit without modification.
  • Does not fit the Chevrolet HHR - the HHR uses a different rear suspension geometry than the Cobalt/G5 and requires a separate KONI part number.
  • This shock uses internal rebound adjustment - the damper must be removed from the vehicle and compressed to change the rebound setting. External knob adjustment is not available on this unit.
  • Compatible with OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs up to 35 mm (approximately 1.4 in) of drop.
  • This is a single rear shock absorber - springs, top mounts, and other hardware are not included.

Features

  • KONI Sport 8040 Series internally adjustable rebound damping - provides approximately 100% adjustment range (up to three times the range of competing adjustable shocks), accommodating both OEM spring rates and a wide variety of performance lowering springs.
  • Twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged damper construction engineered specifically for the GM Delta platform, delivering improved road holding, body motion control, and handling precision over OEM or worn replacement shocks.
  • Yellow-painted shock body - KONI Sport's iconic finish, indicating a product from KONI's performance-oriented range designed for sporty driving enthusiasts and multi-use vehicles.
  • Significantly reduces body roll, rear squatting under acceleration, and brake-induced pitch, improving the overall balance and steering confidence of the front-wheel-drive Cobalt and G5 platform - particularly relevant for the Cobalt SS, whose turbocharged or supercharged drivetrain demands more composed rear axle control.
  • Specifically engineered and tailored for the Delta platform's rear semi-independent torsion beam suspension geometry - not a universal damper, but a vehicle-specific unit calibrated for the correct stroke, mounting points, and spring rates of these applications.
  • Compatible with performance lowering springs up to 35 mm of drop - the wide internal adjustment range allows the damping to be correctly matched to higher aftermarket spring rates for a properly controlled lowered setup.
  • Re-buildable and re-valvable - the shock can be serviced and returned to factory-equivalent performance after extended use, or re-valved for custom damping requirements specific to a particular build.
  • Excellent choice for multi-use Cobalts and G5s driven on the street and used for autocross or track day events, as the adjustment range covers both daily comfort and performance-focused setups.
  • Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.

Product Description

The KONI 8040-1364Sport is a yellow-painted, internally adjustable rear shock absorber from KONI's Sport 8040 Series, engineered specifically for the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt and the 2007-2009 Pontiac G5 on GM's Delta platform. It fits all trim levels of both vehicles - from the base LS through the turbocharged Cobalt SS - and is calibrated specifically for the Delta platform's semi-independent rear torsion beam suspension geometry, providing improved road holding, reduced body roll, and sharper rear axle composure over OEM or worn stock replacement shocks. The twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged construction delivers consistent damping performance across a wide range of road and track inputs, and the wide ~100% internal rebound adjustment range - up to three times the adjustment range of competing adjustable shock designs - allows the damping curve to be dialed in to match everything from OEM spring rates to performance lowering springs with up to 35 mm of drop.

The KONI 8040 Sport uses internal rebound adjustment: the shock absorber must be removed from the vehicle and compressed to change the rebound setting. Despite this additional step compared to externally adjustable designs, the 8040 provides the same KONI Sport performance characteristics that have made it the preferred rear damper for Cobalt and G5 enthusiasts - reduced rear squat under hard acceleration, improved high-speed directional stability, and a more planted rear end through corners and under braking. The shock is re-buildable and re-valvable, extending its productive service life significantly beyond non-serviceable OEM or economy replacement units, and can be customized through body length and valving changes for specific build requirements.

This part number is confirmed for the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt in all body styles (sedan and coupe) and all trims including the Cobalt SS Supercharged and Cobalt SS Turbocharged, as well as the 2007-2009 Pontiac G5 Coupe (US market). It does not fit the Saturn Ion or Chevrolet HHR despite their shared platform heritage - those vehicles use different rear shock mounting configurations and require separate part numbers. This shock is sold individually; two units are required for a complete rear axle installation. Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.
