  • 1986-1989 Toyota Celica GT-FOUR (ST165) - 3S-GTE 2.0L DOHC 16v Turbo (Gen 1)
  • 1990-1993 Toyota Celica GT-FOUR / All-Trac (ST185) - 3S-GTE 2.0L DOHC 16v Turbo (Gen 2)
  • 1994-1999 Toyota Celica GT-FOUR (ST205) - 3S-GTE 2.0L DOHC 16v Turbo (Gen 3)
  • 1990-1999 Toyota MR2 (SW20) - 3S-GE and 3S-GTE variants
  • 1994-2002 Toyota Caldina GT-T / GT-Four (ST215W/ST246W) - 3S-GTE 2.0L Turbo (Gen 4/5)
  • 1997-2005 Toyota Altezza RS200 (SXE10) - 3S-GE BEAMS 2.0L DOHC (Gen 5)
  • Various Toyota Corona, Carina, Camry, RAV4 - 3S-GE naturally aspirated variants by generation

Fitment Notes

  • The HX designation indicates extra oil clearance: the bearing wall is approximately 0.013mm thinner per shell compared to the standard 4B8366H-STD set, providing approximately 0.025mm (0.001") of additional running clearance at standard crankshaft journal diameter - without any crankshaft grinding.
  • The HX variant is a popular choice for turbocharged 3S-GTE builds and high-revving naturally aspirated 3S-GE applications where a slightly more liberal oil clearance is desired for improved bearing protection under elevated loads and temperatures.
  • For standard oil clearance at stock journal diameter, use 4B8366H-STD. For reground crankshafts, use the appropriate oversize H set: 4B8366H-.025 (+0.025mm), 4B8366H-.25 (+0.25mm), or 4B8366H-.50 (+0.50mm).
  • Covers all five generations of the naturally aspirated 3S-GE (1984-2005) and all four generations of the turbocharged 3S-GTE (1986-2007) - all share the same crankpin journal dimensions.
  • Always confirm actual running clearance with Plastigage or a dial bore gauge after assembly - do not rely solely on bearing size designation.
  • Sold as a complete set of 8 bearing shells - sufficient for one full 4-cylinder engine build.

Features

  • Tri-metal construction: copper-lead alloy lining bonded over a hardened steel backing, with a high-strength overlay plate - engineered for the high-RPM demands of the naturally aspirated 3S-GE and the sustained boost loads of the turbocharged 3S-GTE.
  • HX extra-clearance wall thickness provides approximately 0.025mm (0.001") of additional oil clearance versus the H-STD set, increasing oil film volume between the crankpin and bearing surface for improved lubrication under extreme load - particularly valuable in boosted 3S-GTE builds running elevated boost or sustained track use.
  • Hardened steel backing on all rod bearings improves structural support of the bearing lining and maintains crush under high sustained loads and temperatures.
  • High-strength overlay plate with reduced thickness provides improved fatigue resistance compared to OEM-spec bearings - a meaningful upgrade for any rebuilt 3S-series engine targeting performance reliability.
  • Increased bearing crush and tighter wall tolerances ensure consistent, secure seating in the connecting rod housing bore, reducing the risk of bearing spin.
  • Enlarged ID chamfers on bearing edges accommodate the larger fillet radii found on performance and aftermarket 3S-series crankshafts.
  • 3/4-groove design optimizes oil supply to the rod journal and maximizes load-carrying surface area across the bearing face.
  • Elimination of flash plating on bearing backs improves heat transfer and maximizes grip between the bearing shell and the rod housing bore.
  • Increased eccentricity compensates for bore distortion at high RPM and assists in the formation of a stable hydrodynamic oil film under load.

Product Description

The ACL Race Series 4B8366HX-STD connecting rod bearing set is the extra-clearance performance option for Toyota's 3S-GE and 3S-GTE inline-4 engine family - spanning the naturally aspirated 3S-GE across five generations (1984-2005) and the turbocharged 3S-GTE across four generations (1986-2007). Sharing the same standard crankpin journal diameter as the 4B8366H-STD, the HX variant uses a slightly thinner wall (~0.013mm per shell) to deliver approximately 0.025mm (0.001") of additional running oil clearance without any crankshaft modification.

The HX variant is widely favored for 3S-GTE turbo builds - the Celica GT-FOUR, MR2 Turbo, and Caldina GT-T community commonly specifies extra clearance bearings for boosted applications where sustained cylinder pressure and heat demand more from the rod bearing oil film. Equally appropriate for high-revving naturally aspirated 3S-GE builds in the Altezza RS200 and BEAMS-spec Celica. All generations of the 3S-GE and 3S-GTE share identical crankpin journal dimensions, making this set universal across the entire engine family at standard crankshaft size. Always confirm clearances at assembly. Sold as a complete set of 8 shells for one engine.
