Vehicle Fitment

  • 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ), All Trims incl. SE, Laredo, Country, Limited, Orvis, TSi; 4WD; Gas - Front, 3"-4" Lift

Fitment Notes

  • This is a front shock absorber - designed specifically for the front axle position on the 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ with 3"-4" of suspension lift.
  • This shock is the front shock component of the Zone Offroad ZONJ16N 4" Coil Spring Lift Kit for the ZJ and is also sold individually for replacement or standalone use.
  • Vehicles equipped with the 5.2L or 5.9L V8 engine may not achieve the full stated lift height due to additional front-end weight. Zone recommends adding 3/4" front coil spacers on V8 models to compensate for engine weight.
  • ZJ models equipped with a CV-style front driveshaft at the pinion will require a new Spicer-type U-joint to eliminate driveline vibration after lift installation.
  • Front driveshaft length should be measured prior to installation: over 24.5" requires no modification; 20"-24" may require a change to a Spicer U-joint if vibration occurs; under 20" requires a Spicer U-joint and vibration may still persist.
  • Shock absorbers are sold individually - order 2 for a complete front axle replacement.
  • Bushings and sleeves are included with each shock for direct bolt-on installation.
  • Upper mount type S1 (Stem) and lower mount type BP7 (Bar Pin) match the ZJ's factory front shock mounting locations.

Features

  • Vehicle-specific valving engineered for the 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee ZJ's front coil-spring suspension geometry at 3"-4" of lift, delivering optimized damping control throughout the full range of front suspension travel.
  • Twin-tube, nitrogen-charged design provides consistent, fade-free damping on- and off-road, preventing oil aeration and heat fade during sustained use.
  • 10-stage velocity-sensitive valving automatically adjusts the damping response in real time to the speed and force of suspension movement, providing a compliant street ride and firm off-road control from the same shock.
  • Fully displaced valving improves the effective range on both compression and extension strokes, maximizing front wheel travel and articulation at the lifted ride height.
  • 50 psi nitrogen gas charge ensures immediate response and prevents fluid foaming inside the shock body during aggressive and sustained off-road use.
  • 1-3/8" Fluon-banded piston minimizes internal friction and maintains accurate, consistent damping performance throughout the shock's service life.
  • Heavy-duty 14mm (5/8") hard-chromed alloy steel shaft resists corrosion, rock chip damage, and surface wear during off-road driving.
  • Steel alloy body with dual-welded ends provides long-term structural integrity under the dynamic loads of off-road use.
  • Matte black powdercoat finish provides lasting corrosion resistance in all weather and off-road conditions.
  • Backed by Zone Offroad's Shield Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Product Description

The Zone Offroad ZON7965 is a vehicle-specific Nitro Series front shock absorber engineered for the 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ at 3"-4" of suspension lift. It serves as the front shock in the Zone Offroad ZONJ16N 4" Coil Spring Lift Kit and is also sold individually for replacement or standalone builds. With 24.70" extended and 14.80" collapsed lengths, the ZON7965 is sized to match the ZJ's front coil-spring suspension geometry at the lifted ride height - providing enough extended length for full front suspension droop and articulation, without inducing shock binding at full compression. The S1 stem upper mount and BP7 bar pin lower mount match the ZJ's factory front shock mounting locations for a direct bolt-on exchange that requires no modification.

Zone's Nitro Series twin-tube design pressurizes the shock body with 50 psi of nitrogen gas to prevent oil foaming and heat fade during sustained off-road use. The 10-stage velocity-sensitive valving adjusts damping in real time based on suspension movement speed - light and compliant over small road imperfections and firm and controlled under hard trail hits and high-speed terrain changes. This valving is specifically calibrated for the ZJ's front suspension characteristics and spring rate at 3"-4" of lift, not simply a generic shock fitted to approximate the travel length. The 1-3/8" Fluon-banded piston maintains low internal friction throughout the shock's service life, and the 14mm hard-chromed alloy shaft handles both daily highway use and the demands of rocky, off-camber trails.

ZJ-specific installation considerations: V8 (5.2L and 5.9L) equipped models often require 3/4" front coil spacers added to the lift kit's springs to compensate for the additional engine weight and achieve the stated lift height. Front driveshaft length should be verified before installation - models with driveshafts under 24.5" may need Spicer-type U-joints to prevent post-lift driveline vibration, and any ZJ equipped with a factory CV-style front driveshaft pinion will require this U-joint swap regardless. Shocks are sold individually; order two for a complete front axle pair. Backed by Zone Offroad's Shield Limited Lifetime Warranty, the ZON7965 is the proven front shock for any 3"-4" ZJ build.
