Vehicle Fitment

  • 1987-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ - 4WD
  • 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ - 4WD (including TJ Unlimited)
  • 1984-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ - 4WD
  • 1986-1992 Jeep Comanche MJ - 4WD
  • 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ - 4WD

Fitment Notes

  • Direct OEM-position replacement - the 7009 replaces the factory steering stabilizer in the original mounting location using the existing factory bracket; the factory shock mounting bolts are reused for installation; no new brackets are required for a standard OEM-position swap
  • Brackets not included - this listing covers the stabilizer cylinder and its installation hardware (washers, bushings, and nuts) only; the factory steering stabilizer bracket on the tie rod and axle is retained; if your brackets are damaged or missing, they will need to be sourced separately before installation
  • Double eyelet mount - the 7009 uses a double-eyelet (eye-to-eye) mounting design with rubber bushings at both ends, matching the factory mounting configuration on all listed vehicles
  • TJ Unlimited (LJ) compatibility - the 2004-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ Unlimited (LJ) shares the same front steering linkage and stabilizer mounting geometry as the standard TJ and is compatible with the 7009
  • Grand Cherokee ZJ coverage - the first-generation Grand Cherokee (ZJ, 1993-1998) shares its front steering stabilizer mounting architecture with the Cherokee XJ platform and is compatible with the 7009; the second-generation Grand Cherokee (WJ, 1999-2004) uses a different front suspension and steering configuration and is not covered by the 7009
  • Factory hardware reused - the factory shock mounting bolts that secure the original stabilizer to its brackets are retained during installation; the 7009 kit includes the necessary washers, bushings, and nuts; no new bolts are required
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty - Skyjacker covers steering stabilizers with a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser for the duration of vehicle ownership; warranty is voided by competition or racing use, and is extended for only one year on commercial vehicles

Features

  • Hydro 7000 twin-tube hydraulic construction - the 7009 uses Skyjacker's Hydro 7000 series twin-tube shock architecture, calibrated for steering stabilizer duty on the YJ/TJ Wrangler, XJ Cherokee, MJ Comanche, and ZJ Grand Cherokee front steering systems; in a twin-tube design, the piston travels within a fluid-filled inner working cylinder, forcing hydraulic fluid through calibrated valving that controls damping force; the Hydro 7000's valving is tuned to effectively resist the rapid, small-amplitude oscillations of steering shimmy and death wobble while remaining compliant enough to allow full steering wheel authority at all times
  • White cylinder with red polyurethane boot - the 7009 features Skyjacker's white cylinder body with a red polyurethane dust boot protecting the piston shaft from dirt, mud, and debris; the red boot distinguishes the 7009 (YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJ/MJ application) from the 7001 (CJ-5/CJ-7/Scrambler) which uses a white boot; the polyurethane material resists the UV degradation and cracking that deteriorates rubber boots in off-road environments
  • HD (heavy-duty) over-OEM specification - the YJ/TJ Wrangler, Cherokee XJ, and their platform-mates were delivered from the factory with a steering stabilizer designed for stock-height, stock-tire operation; owners who lift their vehicles, install larger tires (31" and above being the common threshold where steering effects become noticeable), or operate frequently on rough terrain impose demands on the stabilizer beyond its original design envelope; the Hydro 7000 HD construction addresses this with a more robust bore and stiffer valving than the stock unit, better suited to the steering loads generated by lifted suspension geometry and larger tire gyroscopic forces
  • Reduces steering shimmy and highway harshness - the solid-axle front suspension of all listed vehicles makes them inherently susceptible to the two most common steering complaints: highway harshness (road surface vibration transmitting through the axle and long linkage back to the steering wheel) and shimmy or "death wobble" (resonant oscillation of the axle/linkage assembly at highway speeds or after a bump); the 7009 provides the damping force that suppresses these oscillations; while a steering stabilizer cannot correct the underlying mechanical wear (loose tie rod ends, worn ball joints, worn track bar bushings) that makes death wobble more likely to trigger, it raises the amplitude threshold at which the oscillation can self-sustain and in many cases eliminates the symptom
  • Reduces driver fatigue - steady highway cruising with an under-damped steering system requires continuous micro-corrections and transfers constant low-level vibration to the driver's hands and arms; over extended drives this is meaningfully fatiguing; the 7009 reduces the magnitude of required corrections and the vibration transmitted to the steering wheel, particularly on highway-speed driving with larger tires
  • Sold individually - one stabilizer per order; the 7009 is the single-stabilizer OEM-position replacement; for dual steering stabilizer configurations (requiring additional brackets), see Skyjacker's dual kit offerings for this application

Product Description

The Skyjacker 7009 is the Hydro 7000 Series HD OEM replacement steering stabilizer for the 1987-2006 Jeep Wrangler YJ and TJ, 1984-2001 Cherokee XJ, 1986-1992 Comanche MJ, and 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee ZJ. It replaces the factory steering stabilizer in the original OEM mounting position, using the factory stabilizer brackets and reusing the factory mounting bolts, with the included washers, bushings, and nuts completing the hardware kit.

The 7009 uses Skyjacker's Hydro 7000 twin-tube hydraulic construction, calibrated for steering stabilizer duty on these applications - providing heavier-duty damping than the factory unit to address the increased shimmy forces that accompany lift kits and larger tires. The white cylinder and distinctive red polyurethane boot identify it as the Hydro 7000 series YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJ application (the CJ-platform 7001 uses a white boot). The polyurethane boot protects the piston shaft from the abrasive dirt and mud that accelerates seal wear in off-road operating environments.

Sold individually; no brackets included. Factory mounting hardware is reused. Limited Lifetime Warranty to the original purchaser for the duration of vehicle ownership.
