Fitment Notes

  • Steel lower control arms only - does not fit vehicles with aluminum steering knuckles or aftermarket cast iron lower control arms
  • Verify that the lower control arm is the OE steel arm before ordering; aftermarket or upgraded cast iron arms are not compatible
  • This part applies to vehicles with torsion bar front suspension
  • Fits both Front Left (Driver Side) and Front Right (Passenger Side) lower positions - one part number serves both sides
  • Greaseable - requires greasing at installation and at every oil change interval for maximum service life
  • Updated design features an integral (internal) dust boot pre-installed inside the joint rather than on the exterior - more stud may be visible after installation than on the stock joint; this is normal
  • Press-in installation - requires a ball joint press or hydraulic press
  • Sold individually - purchase two (2) units to replace both front lower ball joints
  • A front-end alignment is strongly recommended following installation

Features

  • Problem Solver gusher bearing uses a metal-to-metal powdered-metal design that allows grease to flow through the bearing surface to the stud, dramatically reducing internal friction and extending service life
  • Oversized housing design addresses the known GM control arm receptacle enlargement issue - provides a more secure press-fit where OE and standard aftermarket joints can become loose over time
  • Greaseable socket with Zerk fitting allows fresh lubricant to actively flush out road contaminants, preventing corrosion and premature internal wear
  • Heat-treated ball stud meets or exceeds OE strength and fatigue resistance requirements, inhibiting premature failure under truck and SUV loads
  • Belleville preload washer maintains consistent socket tension as bearings wear, preserving tight and precise steering feel over the life of the part
  • Integral pre-installed dust boot design sits inside the joint housing for improved contamination protection without the vulnerability of an exposed external boot
  • Full-ball hardened stud delivers consistent 360-degree stud articulation throughout the entire service life of the part
  • One-piece forged housing provides maximum structural strength under the heavy loads of full-size trucks and SUVs
  • Precision-machined tolerances ensure accurate press-in fitment and correct front-end geometry alignment right out of the box
  • Engineered steel composition results in a stronger overall component compared to standard OE replacement designs

Product Description

The Moog K6541 is a front lower press-in ball joint engineered as a direct Problem Solver OE replacement for a wide range of GMT800 and GMT900 platform GM full-size trucks and SUVs, spanning from the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 through the 2016 model year, and covering the Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Escalade, Avalanche, Express, and Savana on shared front suspension architecture. All covered vehicles use a torsion bar front suspension with a steel lower control arm, and the K6541 is engineered specifically for vehicles with OE steel lower control arms - vehicles with aluminum steering knuckles or aftermarket cast iron lower arms are not compatible. The front lower ball joint is the primary suspension pivot connecting the lower control arm to the steering knuckle, enabling all controlled wheel articulation through steering and suspension travel. As these joints wear, drivers experience clunking or knocking over bumps, loose or wandering steering feel, and accelerated front tire wear.

A well-documented issue on these GMT platform trucks is that the control arm ball joint receptacle can enlarge over time as the OE or standard replacement joint wears, creating a loose fit that undermines steering precision. The K6541 addresses this with an oversized housing design that provides a more secure press-fit into the control arm, eliminating play that standard replacements cannot correct. Moog's powdered-metal gusher bearing allows grease to actively flow through the bearing material to the ball stud, rather than accumulating around the housing perimeter. This ensures continuous lubrication at the actual wear surface, dramatically reducing friction and slowing the internal wear that leads to ball joint failure on these high-mileage trucks. The updated design features an integral dust boot pre-installed inside the joint housing itself, rather than as an exposed external boot, providing superior contamination protection.

Installation requires a ball joint press or hydraulic shop press to properly seat the joint into the lower control arm. After pressing in, more stud may be visible than on the original joint - this is normal with the updated integral boot design and does not indicate an incorrect fit. Two units are required for a complete front lower axle service. Greasing at installation and at every oil change is required to maintain full service life and warranty coverage. A front-end alignment is strongly recommended following installation to restore correct camber, caster, and toe geometry. Backed by Moog's Limited Lifetime Warranty, the K6541 is the professional-grade solution for permanently restoring front suspension precision and steering confidence to GM's most popular full-size truck and SUV platforms.
