When oil temperature is below the thermostat's opening range (~180-195 °F), the internal valve restricts flow to the oil cooler to help the engine reach optimal operating temperature faster. Once oil reaches the target temperature, the thermostat opens, allowing oil to circulate through the cooler - helping maintain proper engine oil temperatures during spirited driving, track use, or heavy-load conditions.
