Vehicle Fitment

  • 1990-1993 Mazda Miata Base (NA; L4 1.6L B6ZE, RWD)
  • 1991 Mazda Miata SE (NA; L4 1.6L B6ZE, RWD)
  • 1993 Mazda Miata LE (NA; L4 1.6L B6ZE, RWD)
  • 1994-1997 Mazda Miata Base (NA; L4 1.8L BP-ZE, RWD)
  • 1994-1997 Mazda Miata M Edition (NA; L4 1.8L BP-ZE, RWD)
  • 1997 Mazda Miata STO (NA; L4 1.8L BP-ZE, RWD)

Fitment Notes

  • Front shock absorber - position is Front Left and Front Right. Left and right units are identical (non-handed). Sold individually (per shock); two units are required for a complete front axle replacement.
  • Fits the first-generation Mazda Miata (NA platform, 1990-1997) in all North American trims. The NA Miata is commonly referred to as the "89-97" in the enthusiast community, as production began and early units were sold in late 1989, though the first North American model year designation was 1990.
  • Important spring perch note: This shock uses the OE Showa standard spring perch position. Miata trims originally equipped from the factory with OE Bilstein shocks (certain M Edition and R-package models) may sit slightly lower when this KONI STR.T is installed, due to the difference in spring perch height between the Bilstein OE design and the standard Showa location used by this unit.
  • Does not fit the second-generation Miata (NB platform, 1999-2005) - that generation requires a different KONI part number.
  • Compatible with OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs. The STR.T's non-adjustable fixed damping is specifically optimized for the NA Miata to work with both standard and lowered spring setups.
  • Sold per shock - one unit only. A complete front axle installation requires two units of this part number.

Features

  • KONI STR.T 8050 Series - entry-level performance front shock absorber custom-valved by KONI engineers specifically for the first-generation NA Miata's double-wishbone front suspension, delivering improved road holding and reduced body roll over worn OEM units at an accessible price point.
  • Non-adjustable fixed-rate damping, factory-optimized for the NA Miata's suspension geometry and spring rates - delivers consistent, predictable performance improvement without any setup required after installation.
  • Twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged construction for consistent damping performance throughout the shock's travel range, minimizing fade during sustained use on both street and light track applications.
  • Orange-painted shock body - KONI STR.T's distinctive finish, differentiating the entry-level performance line from KONI's adjustable Sport (yellow) range while delivering KONI's engineering quality and reliability.
  • Engineered to complement both OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs - the STR.T's design is specifically developed to work effectively with springs shorter than the originals, making it a natural pairing for lowered NA Miata setups.
  • Reduces front body dive under braking and body roll through corners compared to worn OEM units, preserving and enhancing the NA Miata's celebrated handling balance and driver feedback.
  • Direct bolt-on installation with no modification required - designed as a drop-in replacement for the original front shock absorbers.
  • Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.

Product Description

The KONI 8050-1041 is a front shock absorber from KONI's STR.T 8050 Series, engineered specifically for the first-generation Mazda Miata (NA platform, 1990-1997) in all North American trim levels. The STR.T - pronounced "Street" - is KONI's entry-level performance shock line: custom-valved by KONI's engineers for the NA Miata's double-wishbone front suspension geometry, it delivers improved road holding, reduced body roll, and better front-end composure compared to worn OEM units, at a price point accessible to the budget-conscious Miata owner. Unlike the adjustable Sport (yellow) series, the STR.T uses fixed-rate, factory-optimized damping - no setup required, consistent performance straight out of the box, and fully compatible with both OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs.

An important installation note specific to this part number: the 8050-1041 uses the OE Showa standard spring perch location. Miata trims that were originally equipped with factory Bilstein shocks - certain M Edition variants and R-package models - will sit slightly lower when fitted with this KONI STR.T, because the Bilstein OE design uses a different (lower) spring perch height than the standard Showa location that this unit mirrors. Owners of those variants should be aware of this modest ride height change before installing. For all other NA Miata trims, the spring perch height matches the OE Showa location exactly.

The NA Miata is commonly referred to in the enthusiast community as the "89-97" - production and early sales began in late calendar year 1989, though the first formal North American model year was 1990. This shock fits the entire 1990-1997 production run including both the 1.6L (1990-1993) and 1.8L (1994-1997) engine variants. The left and right front units are identical - a single part number covers both sides. Two units are required for a complete front axle installation. Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.
