Vehicle Fitment

  • 1992-1999 BMW 318i Sedan / 318is Coupe / 318ic Convertible (E36; I4 1.8L M42/M44, RWD)
  • 1994-1999 BMW 323is Coupe / 323ic Convertible (E36; I6 2.5L M52, RWD)
  • 1992-1999 BMW 325i Sedan / 325is Coupe / 325ic Convertible (E36; I6 2.5L M50/M52, RWD)
  • 1995-1999 BMW 328i Sedan / 328is Coupe / 328ic Convertible (E36; I6 2.8L M52, RWD)

Fitment Notes

  • Rear shock absorber - position is Rear Left and Rear Right. Left and right units are identical (non-handed). Sold individually (per shock); two units are required for a complete rear axle replacement.
  • Fits all standard E36 3 Series body styles - Sedan, Coupe, and Convertible - across all listed powertrains. The E36 shares the same rear multi-link (Z-axle) suspension geometry across these variants, allowing a single rear shock part number to serve the full lineup.
  • Does not fit the E36 M3 (1995-1999). The M3 uses a sport-tuned rear suspension variant and is served by a different KONI part number. Verify your vehicle's model designation before ordering.
  • Does not fit the E36 Compact (318ti). The E36 Compact uses a torsion beam rear suspension that is not compatible with this shock absorber.
  • This is the KONI STR.T 8250 Series - non-adjustable, fixed-rate damping. There are no user-adjustment settings; the shock is factory-set to KONI's recommended damping level for the E36 Z-axle suspension and works with both OEM and performance lowering springs.
  • Compatible with performance lowering springs up to approximately 40 mm of drop on the OEM spring perch location.
  • Sold per shock - one unit only. Two units are required for a complete rear axle installation.

Features

  • KONI STR.T 8250 Series - entry-level performance rear shock absorber custom-valved by KONI engineers specifically for the BMW E36's rear multi-link (Z-axle) suspension geometry, delivering improved road holding and reduced body roll over worn OEM units at an accessible price point.
  • Non-adjustable fixed-rate damping, factory-optimized for the E36 rear suspension and spring rates - delivers consistent, predictable performance improvement without any setup required after installation.
  • Twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged construction for consistent damping performance throughout the shock's full travel range, minimizing fade during sustained street and occasional track use.
  • Orange-painted shock body - KONI STR.T's distinctive finish, differentiating the entry-level performance line from KONI's adjustable Sport (yellow) range while delivering KONI's engineering quality and reliability.
  • Compatible with both OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs, making it a natural pairing for E36 owners looking to lower their chassis while maintaining correctly matched damping - an advantage over re-using worn OEM shocks on a lowered car.
  • Reduces body roll in corners, nose dive under braking, and rear squat under acceleration compared to worn OEM units - restoring and improving the E36's well-regarded rear axle composure and driver feedback.
  • Direct bolt-on installation - designed as a drop-in replacement for the original E36 rear shock absorbers with no modification required.
  • Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.

Product Description

The KONI 8250-1002 is the rear shock absorber from KONI's STR.T 8250 Series, engineered for the BMW E36 3 Series in the North American market across the full standard lineup - 318i, 323i, 325i, and 328i - in Sedan, Coupe, and Convertible body styles from 1992 through 1999. All of these variants share the same rear multi-link Z-axle suspension geometry, allowing a single non-handed part number to serve the entire non-M, non-Compact E36 lineup at the rear. The E36 M3 (1995-1999) uses a sport-tuned rear suspension variant and requires a different KONI part number, as does the E36 Compact (318ti) whose torsion beam rear axle is incompatible with this shock.

As a STR.T damper, the 8250-1002 delivers KONI's custom-valved, fixed-rate performance improvement over worn OEM shocks without requiring any user adjustment. The damping level is pre-set at the factory to KONI's specification for the E36 Z-axle suspension, and works with both OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs up to approximately 40 mm of drop - making it a well-matched companion to popular E36 spring upgrades from H&R, Eibach, and similar manufacturers. The orange-painted STR.T shock restores the E36's rear body roll resistance, braking composure, and suspension precision at an entry-level price point, without compromising the daily drivability that makes the STR.T series appropriate for street-focused E36 builds.

Left and right rear units are identical - two units of this single part number are required for a complete rear axle installation. Direct bolt-on fit with no modification required. Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.
