Vehicle Fitment

  • 1998-1999 Mazda Miata Base (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 1999 Mazda Miata 10th Anniversary Edition (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2000-2005 Mazda Miata Base (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2000-2005 Mazda Miata LS (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2000-2003 Mazda Miata SE (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2003 Mazda Miata Shinsen (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3, RWD)
  • 2004-2005 Mazda Miata Mazdaspeed (NB; L4 1.8L BP-Z3 Turbocharged, RWD)

Fitment Notes

  • Rear shock absorber - position is Rear Left and Rear Right. Sold individually (per shock); two units are required for a complete rear axle replacement set.
  • Fits all trim levels of the second-generation Mazda Miata (NB platform, 1998-2005) at the rear, including the turbocharged 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed variant.
  • This is the direct rear companion to KONI 8041-1251SPORT (front shock). Together they form a complete four-corner KONI Sport upgrade for the NB Miata.
  • Does not fit the first-generation Miata (NA platform, 1990-1997) or the third-generation Miata (NC platform, 2006-2015) - both require separate KONI part numbers.
  • The NB Miata uses a double-wishbone rear suspension layout. This shock is engineered and valved specifically for that geometry and the NB's rear spring rates across all trims.
  • Compatible with OEM spring rates and performance lowering springs up to 35 mm (approximately 1.4 in) of total drop.
  • Sold per shock - two rear units required for a complete rear axle installation. Companion front shock: KONI 8041-1251SPORT.

Features

  • KONI Sport 8041 Series externally adjustable rebound damping - the adjustment knob at the top of the damper allows rebound to be tuned from full soft to full firm without removing the shock from the vehicle, enabling quick on-car adjustments between street and track settings.
  • Approximately 100% rebound adjustment range - up to three times the range of competing adjustable shock designs - accommodating both OEM spring rates and a wide variety of performance lowering springs without requiring a different unit.
  • Twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged damper construction specifically engineered for the NB Miata's double-wishbone rear suspension, delivering improved road holding, rear body roll reduction, and rear axle stability over OEM or worn replacement shocks.
  • Yellow-painted shock body - KONI Sport's iconic finish, and a long-established benchmark rear shock upgrade for the NB Miata in both the street and competitive autocross communities.
  • Significantly reduces rear body roll, rear squat under acceleration, and pitch under braking - preserving the NB Miata's acclaimed chassis balance and sharpening response through corners for a more communicative and controlled driving experience.
  • Equally effective on the turbocharged Mazdaspeed Miata (2004-2005), where the increased output and factory-tuned suspension benefit from the wider adjustment range and improved damping consistency under spirited use.
  • Compatible with performance lowering springs, Ground Control coilover conversion kits, and other NB-platform setups, allowing ride height adjustment over a wide range while retaining KONI's full external rebound adjustability.
  • Re-buildable and re-valvable - the shock can be serviced and returned to factory-equivalent performance after extended use, or re-valved for custom damping specifications for dedicated autocross, time attack, or track builds.
  • Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.

Product Description

The KONI 8041-1252Sport is a yellow-painted, externally adjustable rear shock absorber from KONI's Sport 8041 Series, engineered as the direct rear complement to the 8041-1251SPORT front shock for the 1998-2005 Mazda Miata (NB platform). It fits all North American NB trim levels at the rear - Base, LS, SE, 10th Anniversary, Shinsen, and the turbocharged 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed - providing a complete KONI Sport solution for the entire NB generation when paired with its front counterpart. Like the front unit, this shock is purpose-built for the NB's double-wishbone rear suspension geometry, calibrated to the platform's rear spring rates and travel for consistent, predictable damping that improves on OEM behavior across the full range of road and driving conditions.

The external rebound adjustment knob allows the full ~100% tuning range to be set without removing the shock from the vehicle, making it practical to switch between a comfortable daily street setup and a firm, track-optimized configuration. The shock is fully compatible with performance lowering springs up to 35 mm of drop and Ground Control coilover conversion setups for the NB platform, with the wide adjustment range ensuring the damping can be correctly matched to a broad variety of spring rates. Together with the 8041-1251SPORT at the front, the 8041-1252Sport completes the benchmark KONI Sport four-corner upgrade for the NB Miata - consistently paired with Eibach, H&R, or Ground Control springs as the foundation for a well-sorted, driver-focused suspension build across decades of Miata ownership and competition.

This shock is sold individually - two units are required for a complete rear axle installation. The companion front shock is KONI 8041-1251SPORT. The damper is re-buildable and re-valvable, extending its service life and enabling custom valving for dedicated competition builds. Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.
