Vehicle Fitment

  • 1997-2000 BMW 528i Sedan (E39; I6 2.8L M52/M52TU, RWD)
  • 2001-2003 BMW 525i Sedan (E39; I6 2.5L M54, RWD)
  • 2001-2003 BMW 530i Sedan (E39; I6 3.0L M54, RWD)
  • 1997-2003 BMW 540i Sedan (E39; V8 4.4L M62/M62TU, RWD) - Incl. M Technik
  • 2000-2003 BMW M5 Sedan (E39; I8 5.0L S62, RWD)

Fitment Notes

  • Rear shock absorber - position is Rear Left and Rear Right. Left and right units are identical (non-handed). Sold individually (per shock); two units are required for a complete rear axle installation.
  • Sedan body style only. The E39 5 Series Touring (Wagon) uses a different KONI part number (8245-1056) for the rear position. Verify your vehicle's body style before ordering.
  • Does not fit vehicles equipped with Electronic Damper Control (EDC) or self-leveling rear suspension. These systems use electronically controlled or hydraulically height-adjustable dampers that are not compatible with this passive shock. Verify your vehicle is not equipped with EDC or self-leveling before ordering.
  • Fits the 540i with the M Technik (sport suspension) package - confirmed fitment regardless of M Technik specification, provided the vehicle does not have EDC.
  • The E39 M5 uses the same rear axle carrier and shock mounting geometry as the standard E39 Sedan and is confirmed fitment for the 2000-2003 production years (North American market).
  • The KONI Special Active FSD shock requires no user adjustment - the FSD valve automatically adapts damping in real time to road conditions and driving inputs. No knobs, settings, or compression/removal adjustment is required or available.
  • Sold per shock - two rear units required for a complete rear axle installation.

Features

  • KONI Special Active 8245 Series with patented Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology - the shock automatically differentiates between large, low-frequency body motions (cornering, braking, acceleration) and small, high-frequency road surface inputs (expansion joints, rough pavement), applying firm control to the former and soft compliance to the latter simultaneously and without any driver input.
  • No adjustment required or available - the FSD valve is self-regulating, eliminating the need for the driver to choose between a firm sport setting and a soft comfort setting. The shock delivers improved handling composure and improved ride quality compared to OEM worn shocks simultaneously.
  • Twin-tube, low-pressure gas-charged construction. The Special Active FSD valve is integrated within the twin-tube design, allowing the frequency-selective behavior to be achieved passively without electronics, sensors, or external power.
  • Red-painted shock body - KONI Special Active's distinctive finish, distinguishing the FSD-equipped line from KONI's yellow Sport and orange STR.T product families.
  • Specifically engineered for the E39 5 Series Sedan's rear multi-link (Central Arm) suspension geometry, restoring and improving the chassis's handling balance, body roll resistance, and rear axle composure - particularly relevant for high-mileage E39s where worn OEM shocks significantly degrade the car's renowned dynamic character.
  • Covers the full range of E39 powertrain variants in North America - from the inline-six 525i and 528i through the V8 540i and the high-performance M5 - with a single rear part number for all non-EDC Sedan applications.
  • Technology proven across over 10 million factory-equipped vehicles worldwide - KONI's FSD technology is used as original equipment by multiple major automakers.
  • Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.

Product Description

The KONI 8245-1054 is a red-painted rear shock absorber from KONI's Special Active 8245 Series, featuring KONI's patented Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology. It is engineered for the 1997-2003 BMW E39 5 Series Sedan in all North American powertrain variants - the I6 528i (1997-2000), I6 525i and 530i (2001-2003), V8 540i including M Technik (1997-2003), and V8 M5 (2000-2003) - on vehicles not equipped with Electronic Damper Control (EDC) or self-leveling rear suspension. The Sedan-only fitment is critical: the E39 Touring (Wagon) requires a different part number (8245-1056). Left and right rear units are identical - two are required for a complete rear axle installation.

The KONI Special Active FSD shock requires no user adjustment and offers none. The FSD valve operates passively and automatically, distinguishing between large low-frequency body motions - such as cornering loads, acceleration squat, and braking dive - and small high-frequency road surface inputs such as expansion joints and rough pavement. It applies firmer damping to the former and softer damping to the latter in real time, without electronics, sensors, or external power. The result is a shock that simultaneously improves the E39's handling composure and body control while also improving ride quality over worn OEM units - a combination that a conventional non-adjustable shock cannot provide and that requires no driver interaction to deliver.

For the high-mileage E39 5 Series - widely regarded as one of BMW's finest chassis generations - the 8245-1054 represents the most technologically advanced passive rear shock replacement available in the aftermarket, restoring and refining the car's celebrated dynamic balance without requiring any setup or ongoing adjustment. Backed by KONI North America's Limited Lifetime Warranty for street use in the United States and Canada.
