Vehicle Fitment

  • Mercedes-Benz G-Class W461 (1992-present; military/utility G-Class; all engines; 4WD) - Front
  • Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463 (1990-2018; civilian G-Class; all engines; 4WD) - Front

Fitment Notes

  • Front shock absorber - non-handed (left and right positions use the same unit). Two units are required for a complete front axle replacement. Sold individually.
  • This is a shock absorber body only - not a complete strut assembly. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class uses a solid front axle with coil springs and separate shock absorbers. The 90-5383 mounts via pin/pin attachments at both ends using the G-Class's OEM front shock mounting points.
  • Lift compatibility: This shock is engineered for G-Class vehicles with standard suspension or with a suspension lift of up to 30-50mm at the front and 0-50mm at the rear. It is not intended for unlisted suspension configurations or extreme long-travel lift builds beyond these ranges.
  • Internally adjustable rebound - the adjustment is made off-vehicle only (the shock must be removed to change the rebound setting). Once set, the shock operates at that fixed setting until removed and readjusted.
  • EU market sources also list W460 (1979-1991) fitment for this part number. North American listings confirm W461 and W463. W460 owners should verify dimensional compatibility (Extended: 632mm / Collapsed: 385mm, pin/pin both ends) before ordering.
  • Sold per unit - one shock only. Two units required for a complete front axle installation.

Features

  • KONI RAID 90 Series front shock - engineered specifically for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's solid front axle suspension, delivering heavy-duty off-road damping performance with KONI's proven 70mm bore, 2.5mm outer tube wall construction, and twin-tube hydraulic design across standard and moderately lifted suspension heights.
  • 70mm bore (large-bore construction) - the enlarged piston diameter compared to standard shocks significantly increases oil volume capacity, improving heat dissipation and damping consistency during sustained off-road use where conventional shocks would fade.
  • 2.5mm outer tube wall thickness - substantially heavier than standard-duty shock outer tubes, the reinforced outer wall maintains damper function even if the outer tube sustains direct impact from rocks or trail debris, a critical design advantage in serious off-road use.
  • Twin-tube hydraulic (non-gas) construction - the twin-tube layout provides a larger oil reservoir for thermal capacity, and the hydraulic (non-pressurized) design allows the shock to maintain function in the extreme articulation angles the G-Class solid axle suspension can reach.
  • Hydraulic rebound stop valve - a dedicated hydraulic rebound end stop progressively slows piston travel approximately 20mm before full extension, preventing metal-to-metal piston contact under full droop articulation and protecting both the shock and surrounding suspension components from impact loads at the end of travel.
  • Bump extra security - a secondary bump protection system provides additional resistance at full compression, protecting the shock body and the G-Class's axle and chassis mounting points from severe bottoming impacts on aggressive terrain.
  • Internally adjustable rebound - the rebound damping can be tuned off-vehicle to match the G-Class's spring rate, payload, and intended use (trail, overlanding, or off-road competition), allowing the shock to be optimized for different setups without replacement.
  • Pin/pin mounting - solid, robust pin-style attachments at both ends, welded 360° around the mounting eyes, match the G-Class's OEM front shock mounting geometry for a direct bolt-in installation.
  • Red-painted body - KONI RAID's distinctive finish, consistent across the RAID off-road product family.
  • Sold individually per unit.

Product Description

The KONI 90-5383 is a front shock absorber from KONI's RAID 90 Series, engineered for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in W461 and W463 generations. It mounts via pin/pin attachments at both ends directly to the G-Class's solid front axle shock mounting points as a direct-fit replacement, with an extended length of 632mm and collapsed length of 385mm. Unlike MacPherson strut-based vehicles, the G-Class uses a solid front axle with separate coil springs and shock absorbers - the 90-5383 is a standalone shock absorber body, not a complete strut. Two units are required for a complete front axle installation. The shock is compatible with standard-height G-Class suspensions and with suspension lifts of up to 30-50mm at the front and 0-50mm at the rear; it is not intended for configurations outside these parameters.

The RAID 90 Series construction sets this shock apart from standard-duty replacements with three primary heavy-duty design features: a 70mm bore for elevated oil volume and improved thermal capacity under sustained off-road use; a 2.5mm outer tube wall - substantially thicker than conventional shock outer tubes - that maintains damper function even after direct rock or debris impact to the outer tube body; and twin-tube hydraulic (non-gas) construction that provides consistent performance through the full articulation range of the G-Class's solid axle. A hydraulic rebound stop valve progressively slows piston travel approximately 20mm before full extension, preventing end-of-travel impacts that can damage both the shock and surrounding hardware. A secondary bump protection system provides additional resistance at full compression. All pin/pin mounting eyes are welded 360° around for maximum structural integrity under off-road load cycles.

Rebound damping is internally adjustable off-vehicle, allowing the shock to be tuned to match different spring rates, payloads, and terrain demands. Once set, the shock operates at that level until removed and readjusted. Sold individually - one shock per unit. Two required for a complete front axle installation.
