Fitment Notes

  • Front position only (fits Left or Right) - sold individually; must be installed in pairs on the front axle

  • Does NOT fit vehicles with factory front self-leveling suspension
  • This is a strut insert (cartridge) - requires the original KONI strut housing to be retained; OE KONI fine-thread gland nut required for installation
  • Internally adjustable - shock must be removed from the vehicle to adjust rebound damping (compress to adjust)
  • Designed for use with OEM stock ride height springs

  • Internally rebound adjustable via compression - allows tuning of damping force to suit driver preference and road conditions

  • Individually matched and tuned to the 911/912 platform for optimized handling and ride balance

Product Description

The KONI 86 1638 is a Classic (Red) series front strut insert designed for the 1968-1974 Porsche 911 and 912 equipped with factory KONI strut housings. Part of KONI's Classic lineup - which applies modern damper engineering to vintage applications - this insert delivers improved handling precision and body motion control over aged or worn OEM units, while maintaining the character appropriate for a classic air-cooled Porsche. The twin-tube, non-gas construction is matched to the original specification for this era's suspension geometry and spring rates.

The insert is internally adjustable via compression, allowing rebound damping to be set before installation to suit the driver's preference. Because KONI OE strut housings use fine threads, a fine-thread gland nut is included. This insert is strictly for cars originally equipped with KONI struts - vehicles with Boge struts require a different part (KONI 8641 1039). Cars with front self-leveling suspension are not compatible. Install in pairs on the front axle per KONI guidelines.
