Vehicle Fitment

  • Universal - Chevrolet Small Block V8 (SBC) with Small Journal (2.000") connecting rod journals: 265 ci, 283 ci, 302 ci, and 327 ci engines (1955-1967 small-journal production era).
  • Compatible with any engine application - street, strip, circle track, drag race, off-road, off-shore, and any other use - equipped with a SBC small-journal 2.000" crankshaft in standard size.

Fitment Notes

  • The CR803XPN is designed for the SBC small journal (2.000" rod journal diameter) used in 265, 283, 302, and 327 cubic inch Chevrolet small block engines produced with small-journal crankshafts (primarily 1955-1967). This is NOT the large-journal (2.100") SBC used in 1968-and-later 302, 327, 350, and 400 engines.
  • Verify your crankshaft's rod journal diameter before ordering. The small-journal SBC (2.000") and large-journal SBC (2.100") require different bearing sets. A micrometer measurement of the rod journals confirms which specification applies to your crankshaft.
  • The "N" (Narrowed) designation means the bearings are machined narrower on the crank cheek side - designed for use with large-radius crankshaft fillet grinds on aftermarket forged cranks. If your crankshaft has a standard OEM fillet radius, the narrowed design is not a concern and functions identically.
  • Size: Standard (STD) - for use with an unmachined or standard-diameter 2.000" crankshaft rod journal. Undersize variants are available for journals that have been ground down.
  • Sold as a complete set of 8 bearing shells - covers all 8 connecting rods in the V8 engine.

Features

  • pMaxBlack™ XP tri-metal construction - King's proprietary nano-scaled SecureBond hardening process modifies the molecular structure of the 0.0005" Babbitt overlay, creating a black fatigue-resistant shield that is 24% stronger and provides 17% more fatigue resistance than conventional tri-metal race bearings at equivalent loads
  • 10,200 PSI overlay load capacity - significantly exceeding the demand placed by high-output small-journal SBC builds, supercharged applications, and sustained high-RPM race use where conventional bearing overlays fail under repeated high-load cycles
  • SecureBond adhesion process - a specialized bonding system that ensures superior adhesion stability between the copper-lead intermediate layer, nickel barrier, and pMaxBlack™ overlay, preventing layer delamination and overlay separation under the shear loads generated at race-level bearing speeds
  • Narrowed design on the crank cheek side - accommodates the large-radius fillet grinds common on aftermarket forged steel SBC crankshafts, providing full bearing width while avoiding the fillet clearance issues that cause conventional-width bearings to contact the crankshaft fillet and produce stress concentrations
  • Increased crush height - ensures superior bearing-to-bore contact across the full bearing surface, improving heat transfer from the bearing shell to the connecting rod bore and reducing the bearing spin potential at high RPM that causes catastrophic failure in drag race and high-RPM circle track applications
  • BullsEye Tolerance™ - wall thickness maintained to ±.0001" shell-to-shell, far tighter than industry standard, ensuring consistent clearance across all 8 shells and eliminating the need to selectively measure and match shells to achieve target oil clearance
  • Medium eccentricity design provides optimum load distribution across the bearing surface and consistent oil wedge formation for a stable hydrodynamic lubrication regime throughout the RPM range
  • Ideal for circle track, drag racing, off-shore, off-road, and all other performance applications that utilize forged steel aftermarket crankshafts producing high loads for extended durations

Product Description

The King Engine Bearings CR803XPN is the XP-series Narrowed connecting rod bearing set for Chevrolet Small Block (SBC) engines with the small-journal 2.000" rod journals - covering the 265, 283, 302, and 327 cubic inch engines produced with small-journal crankshafts (primarily 1955-1967). The set includes 8 shells covering all connecting rods in the V8. Standard size - verify rod journal diameter before ordering. Not for the large-journal 2.100" SBC used in 1968-and-later 302/327/350/400 engines.

The XP-series pMaxBlack™ overlay is King's answer to the fundamental limitation of conventional tri-metal bearings in high-performance applications: the Babbitt overlay, which provides conformability and embeddability in OE bearing designs, has insufficient hardness and fatigue resistance for the sustained high-load cycles, elevated RPM, and thermal demands of race and performance engines. King's SecureBond nano-scaled hardening process modifies the Babbitt at the molecular level, creating a harder, more fatigue-resistant surface without changing the overlay's conformability properties - delivering a bearing that wears conventionally under normal loads but resists fatigue and deformation under the extreme loads that destroy conventional race bearings.

The Narrowed (N) designation specifically addresses a geometry issue common with aftermarket forged steel crankshafts: their large-radius fillet grinds at the rod journal transitions require clearance that standard-width bearings cannot provide. The narrowed crank-cheek-side design gives the fillet the clearance it needs while maintaining full bearing width in the load-bearing zone. BullsEye Tolerance™ at ±.0001" eliminates shell-to-shell clearance variation, and increased crush height ensures correct seating and spin resistance at high RPM - the combination that circle track, drag race, and road race engine builders rely on for consistency and reliability under demanding race conditions.
