Vehicle Fitment

  • 1989-1994 Nissan Skyline GT-R BNR32 (RB26DETT, AWD)
  • 1995-1998 Nissan Skyline GT-R BCNR33 (RB26DETT, AWD)
  • 1999-2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R BNR34 (RB26DETT, AWD)

Fitment Notes

  • RB26DETT (GT-R) applications only - this system was developed exclusively for the RB26DETT and does NOT fit non-GT-R RB25DE, RB25DET, RB20DE, or RB20DET applications
  • This is the VALCON-LESS version - the VALCON Type-RB26 controller unit is NOT included and must be purchased separately. Compatible controllers: HKS VALCON Type-RB26 (sold separately), or HKS F-CON V Pro ver. 3.4 or later. The V-CAM system will not function without one of these controllers
  • For the complete kit including VALCON, see HKS 22007-AN018 (V-CAM System Step 2 with VALCON RB)
  • An HKS Forged Piston Kit is required for installation due to piston clearance requirements - the V-CAM system cannot be installed on a standard-clearance RB26DETT build
  • A high-flow oil pump is required - the V-CAM system is hydraulically actuated by engine oil pressure, and an inadequate oil pump will result in insufficient valve timing adjustment at idle, low RPM, or during sustained high-load driving
  • Upgraded valve springs (sold separately) are required if the engine will be operated above 8,000 RPM - with stock valve springs, the system is limited to 8,000 RPM maximum; with HKS upgraded valve springs, the limit is 8,500 RPM
  • An exhaust camshaft upgrade (272° recommended) is required and sold separately - this kit provides the intake V-CAM unit only; the exhaust camshaft must be sourced separately
  • Timing belt tension and wear must be inspected every 10,000 km after installation
  • Engine oil must be changed regularly; HKS Super Oil (RB) or Racing Oil 10W-50 is recommended. Low-viscosity oil will result in insufficient oil pressure for proper valve timing actuation
  • ECU tuning is required after installation to map fuel injection volume and ignition timing to the variable intake valve timing range
  • Not legal for street use in California (not CARB-approved) - for competition and off-road use only

Features

  • Adds a fully variable intake valve timing (VVT) system to the RB26DETT's intake camshaft - the OEM RB26DETT has no variable valve timing, making this a fundamental architecture upgrade that unlocks power across the entire RPM range
  • Step 2 intake camshaft: 264° duration, 8.7mm valve lift - specially designed for the V-CAM system to deliver smoother high-RPM acceleration than the fixed-profile Step 1 cam (272° IN/EX solid)
  • Variable timing range of 75°-125° (50° total adjustment window) - the system continuously adjusts intake cam timing based on engine conditions via oil pressure, optimizing valve overlap for the current RPM and load
  • Vane-type hydraulic actuator - high-torque vane design provides fast, precise cam phasing response without the mechanical lag of older cam phaser designs
  • Low and mid-range torque improvement - the primary benefit of VVT on the RB26DETT is reduction of the boost lag "dead zone" at turbocharger spool-up; by optimizing intake cam timing at low RPM, more air-fuel mixture is retained in the cylinder, allowing the turbos to build boost faster and improving torque delivery from lower in the rev range
  • High-RPM power advantage - Step 2 is specifically designed to show substantial power and torque improvement for RB26 builds targeting 600 PS or higher compared to the original Step 1 Type B (256° EX) configuration
  • Idle stability improvement - reduced valve overlap at idle produces more stable combustion, reduces engine vibration, and smooths idle quality compared to a fixed high-duration cam setup
  • Fuel economy and emissions improvement - variable valve timing reduces pumping losses and improves combustion efficiency at part-throttle conditions
  • HKS original casting intake-side head cover included - unpainted, features special HKS logo plate
  • Engineered and validated by HKS with direct RB26DETT GT-R motorsport development and engine build experience

Product Description

The HKS 22007-AN021 is the Step 2 V-CAM (Variable Camshaft) System for the Nissan Skyline GT-R RB26DETT - in VALCON-less configuration, meaning the hydraulic cam phaser unit and associated hardware are included but the VALCON Type-RB26 controller (or F-CON V Pro ver. 3.4+) must be purchased separately to operate the system. The V-CAM is one of HKS's most technically sophisticated RB26DETT engine upgrades: it retrofits a fully variable intake valve timing system to an engine that was never equipped with one from the factory. By continuously varying the intake cam timing between 75° and 125° based on engine oil pressure signals from the controller, the V-CAM dramatically improves torque delivery at low and mid-range RPM - the regime where the stock RB26DETT is at its weakest due to boost lag - while simultaneously maintaining or improving peak power at high RPM.

The Step 2 cam profile (264° duration, 8.7mm lift) was developed specifically for use with the V-CAM system. It delivers smoother high-RPM acceleration than the fixed Step 1 profile (272° IN/EX solid), and is designed to show substantial power and torque gains for RB26 builds targeting 600 PS or higher. The system's vane-type hydraulic actuator responds quickly and precisely to oil pressure, with cam phase changes occurring continuously as engine conditions change. This means the RB26DETT with V-CAM behaves more like a modern variable-valve-timing engine in everyday driving - less peaky, more tractable at low RPM - while retaining the full-boost, high-RPM aggression of a heavily built GT-R engine. The variable overlap reduction at idle also improves combustion stability and smooths idle quality meaningfully compared to a fixed-profile high-duration cam setup.

Due to the piston-to-valve clearance requirements of the V-CAM's 8.7mm intake lift, an HKS Forged Piston Kit is mandatory - this system cannot be safely installed in a stock-clearance engine. A high-flow oil pump is also required, as oil pressure is the sole actuation mechanism for the cam phaser; an underperforming pump at low RPM or high oil temperature will result in incomplete or sluggish cam timing advance. The system should be run with HKS Super Oil (RB) or Racing Oil 10W-50 and oil changed regularly to maintain proper viscosity and pressure delivery. Timing belt inspection every 10,000 km is critical. Professional engine management tuning is required to map the variable intake timing range into the fueling and ignition strategy. For the complete V-CAM Step 2 kit including the VALCON controller, see HKS 22007-AN018.
