Fitment Notes

• Fits the all-new GMT-900 (2007-2018), T1 (2019-2020), and 2021-2022 Silverado/Sierra 1500 only. Does NOT fit the 2007 Silverado/Sierra 1500 Classic (GMT-800 platform) - use Hellwig 986 for the 2007 Classic.
• The 987 uses a step-bracket design that installs on top of the factory leaf spring pack over the existing U-bolts. The factory U-bolts do NOT need to be loosened or removed - the step bracket clears them during installation, making this one of the simplest helper spring installs available.
• Trucks equipped with factory overload springs must have those overloads removed before installation.
• Not recommended for vehicles equipped with rear air conditioning - the helper springs can come in close proximity to the rear AC lines and risk puncturing them if the springs shift or move.
• This kit does NOT raise the rear ride height when installed. It prevents the rear from sagging under load but does not add lift when empty.
• Adding helper springs does NOT increase the vehicle's factory GVWR rating.
• Two spring assemblies are included - one per side of the rear axle. Kit includes all necessary hardware.

Product Description

The Hellwig 987 EZ-990 Rear Helper Spring Kit is a medium-duty rear load assist kit engineered for the 2007-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 across three platform generations - the GMT-900 (2007-2018), T1 (2019-2020), and the 2021-2022 model run. The GMT-900 and later half-ton Silverado and Sierra platforms are popular towing and hauling vehicles, but their factory rear leaf springs are calibrated for general ride comfort rather than sustained payload capacity, leading to noticeable rear sag when owners tow trailers, pull campers, or carry heavy bed loads regularly. The 987 addresses this with 2,000 lbs. of additional level load capacity while maintaining factory ride quality when empty.

The step-bracket installation design is a standout feature of the 987: unlike conventional helper spring kits that require the existing factory axle U-bolts to be loosened or removed, the 987's step brackets clear the factory U-bolts and clamp over the top of the existing leaf spring pack. This means installation can be completed without disturbing any factory suspension hardware, significantly reducing installation time and eliminating the risk of damaging corroded factory U-bolt hardware. All required mounting hardware and U-bolts are included in the kit, and the installation can typically be completed in approximately one hour.

Three important restrictions: first, the 987 is for the all-new 2007 GMT-900 body Silverado/Sierra only - the 2007 Classic (GMT-800 carryover) is not compatible and requires Hellwig 986 instead. Second, trucks equipped with factory overload springs must have those removed before installation. Third, Hellwig does not recommend these springs on Silverados or Sierras equipped with rear air conditioning due to the proximity of the spring assemblies to the rear AC lines.
