Fitment Notes

  • Position: Rear axle only for all applications listed above.
  • Caliper type: OEM stock rear disc brake calipers (FMSI D458) on all listed applications.
  • Not compatible with carbon ceramic rotors. For use with iron/metal rotors only.
  • The Mazda Miata NA (1990-1993) 1.6L application is the recognized Spec Miata rear pad shape for this platform.
  • The Ford Escort GT, Mercury Tracer LTS/Base/Trio, and Mazda Protege LX all share the same rear brake caliper and pad shape as the NA Miata rear, confirmed by common BG/Mazda chassis brake system cross-compatibility.
  • Due to the HP Plus compound's higher friction levels, increased rotor wear, brake dust, and noise compared to street pads should be expected.
  • The Mazda Protege 4WD fitment applies to 1990-1991 models only.

Features

  • HP Plus (Enhanced Compound) Ferro-Carbon formulation - Hawk's crossover street/autocross compound engineered for Solo II, autocross, and track day use while remaining streetable between events without requiring a pad swap.
  • Higher torque and temperature range than OEM rear pads - Delivers a noticeable increase in rear brake torque and fade resistance, improving overall brake balance and deceleration confidence during aggressive driving.
  • Fade resistant across 100-800°F - Maintains consistent friction output across a wide operating range, from cold street use through the sustained heat of repeated autocross runs or track day sessions.
  • Recognized rear Spec Miata pad shape - The HB157 pad fits the rear of the 1990-1993 NA Miata 1.6L, a proven competition fitment in SCCA Spec Miata events and grassroots road racing.
  • Street usable between events - Unlike pure race compounds, the HP Plus can be driven daily without premature wear, cold-bite issues, or caliper seizure risk, making it an ideal one-compound solution for weekend autocross competitors.
  • Smooth and predictable torque build - Linear friction characteristics deliver progressive, controlled brake force at the rear axle, helping maintain balance and preventing rear lock-up under hard braking.
  • Enhanced compound (post-July 16, 2018) - Units produced after this date use Hawk's improved HP Plus formulation, with lower pad wear, better rotor wear characteristics, and reduced temperature sensitivity versus the original formula.
  • Integrally molded construction without shims - Provides a solid, direct pad-to-caliper interface with no loose shim components to rattle or migrate at temperature.
  • 100% asbestos, lead, chromium, cadmium, and antimony free - Made in the USA in an ISO-certified facility.

Product Description

The Hawk HB157N.484 HP Plus brake pads are rear-axle pads built for the 1990-1993 Mazda Miata NA 1.6L, the 1990-1994 Mazda Protege LX, the 1991-1996 Ford Escort GT, and the 1991-1996 Mercury Tracer LTS and related trim variants - all of which share the same OEM rear brake caliper and pad shape (FMSI D458). This is the established rear pad for the NA Miata 1.6L in Spec Miata competition and autocross use, where it pairs directly with the HB148N.560 front pad to provide a matched HP Plus brake system on the full vehicle. The HP Plus compound delivers substantially more brake torque and fade resistance than OEM rear pads, operating across a 100-800°F range with an optimal window of 300-600°F - broad enough to cover both cold morning commutes and back-to-back autocross runs without fade or consistency issues.

The HP Plus compound is specifically engineered as a street/competition crossover: aggressive enough to provide genuine performance gains at the autocross course, but usable enough to drive home afterward without the noise, rotor damage, or cold-bite unpredictability associated with pure race compounds. Compared to the standard HPS compound, the HP Plus delivers more initial bite and higher peak torque at the rear axle, which improves overall deceleration rates and brake balance on lightweight platforms like the NA Miata where the stock OEM rear pads are often the limiting factor. All units manufactured after July 16, 2018 feature Hawk's enhanced HP Plus formulation, which improves pad and rotor longevity and reduces temperature sensitivity versus the original compound.

This pad is specific to the rear axle and is sold as a set of two pads. It fits OEM stock rear disc calipers only and is compatible with iron and metal rotors exclusively - carbon ceramic brake discs are not supported. Due to the HP Plus compound's elevated friction characteristics, drivers should expect increased brake dust, noise, and rotor wear compared to OEM or HPS pads. A proper bed-in procedure using 6-10 progressive slow-downs from 30-45 mph is recommended after installation to build an even transfer film at the pad-rotor interface before full performance use.
