Fitment Notes

  • Position: Front axle only for all applications listed above.
  • Caliper type: OEM stock calipers on all listed applications.
  • Not compatible with carbon ceramic rotors. For use with iron/metal rotors only.
  • The Mazda Miata NA (1990-1993) with the 1.6L engine is the primary performance fitment; this is the recognized Spec Miata pad shape for the 1.6L NA platform.
  • The Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse/Stylus share the same front brake caliper and pad shape, confirmed across all compound variants of the HB148 pad shape.
  • Due to the HP Plus compound's increased friction and torque levels, elevated rotor wear, brake dust, and noise compared to street pads should be expected.

Features

  • HP Plus (Enhanced Compound) Ferro-Carbon formulation - Hawk's ideal street/autocross crossover compound, engineered specifically for Solo II, autocross, and track day driving while remaining streetable between events.
  • Lower wear rates and higher torque than competing materials - The unique Ferro-Carbon friction material delivers a higher coefficient of friction over OEM pads, providing a noticeable increase in brake torque and temperature range for performance driving.
  • Fade resistant from 100-800°F - Maintains consistent braking force across the full operating range, from cold street starts through sustained autocross heats or track day sessions.
  • Recognized Spec Miata front pad - The HB148 pad shape on the 1990-1993 NA Miata 1.6L is a staple fitment in SCCA Spec Miata competition, where these pads have been used extensively at the autocross and regional race level.
  • Street usable between events - Unlike dedicated race compounds, the HP Plus compound can be driven to and from the track without requiring a pad swap, making it a practical one-pad solution for autocross and track day competitors.
  • Smooth and predictable torque output - Linear friction build provides progressive, modulated braking response with consistent release characteristics for precise braking at corner entry.
  • Improved over the original HP Plus compound - Units manufactured after July 16, 2018 use the enhanced HP Plus formulation, which delivers lower pad wear, improved rotor wear, and reduced temperature sensitivity over the original formula.
  • Integrally molded construction without shims - Eliminates shim-related noise and movement for a solid, direct pad-to-caliper interface.
  • 100% asbestos, lead, chromium, cadmium, and antimony free - Made in the USA in an ISO-certified facility.

Product Description

The Hawk HB148N.560 HP Plus brake pads are front-axle pads engineered for the 1990-1993 Mazda Miata NA 1.6L, the 1990-1993 Geo Storm, the 1990-1992 Isuzu Impulse, and the 1991-1993 Isuzu Stylus - all platforms sharing a common OEM front brake caliper and pad shape. The HP Plus compound has become one of the most widely recognized performance brake pads for the 1.6L NA Miata specifically, serving as a go-to front pad choice in SCCA Spec Miata competition and autocross events. Using Hawk's Ferro-Carbon HP Plus formulation, these pads bridge the gap between street comfort and genuine track performance, delivering significantly higher brake torque and fade resistance than OEM pads across a 100-800°F operating range - all without requiring removal and reinstallation between driving events.

Compared to Hawk's HPS compound, the HP Plus delivers more aggressive initial bite and higher peak torque, making it better suited to repeated hard stops on a competition course than to gentle daily commuting. The trade-off for that performance gain is increased brake dust, elevated noise levels, and greater rotor wear compared to street compounds - characteristics that are entirely acceptable for autocross or track-day drivers who are prioritizing lap times and braking confidence. All HP Plus units produced after July 16, 2018 use the enhanced compound, which improves upon the original formulation with lower pad wear, improved rotor friendliness, and reduced temperature sensitivity for more consistent modulation across a wider heat range.

The HB148N.560 is an OEM-caliper-specific front pad, sold as a set of two pads, and is compatible with iron and metal rotors only. It must not be used on carbon ceramic brake discs. Hawk recommends a proper bed-in procedure using 6-10 progressive slow-downs from 30-45 mph after installation to establish an even transfer film on the rotor surface before full performance loads are applied.
