Fitment Notes

  • Position: Front axle only for all applications listed above.
  • FMSI Caliper Reference: D1009.
  • Not compatible with carbon ceramic rotors. For use with iron/metal rotors only.
  • This pad covers all 2004-2011 Mazda RX-8 trims and both Standard and Sport Suspension configurations. Mazda made mid-year production changes to the RX-8 during the 2005 (effective 10/11/2004) and 2007 (effective 07/31/2006) model years; all pre- and post-change variants within those years use the same FMSI D1009 front caliper and are covered by this fitment.
  • The RX-8's 1.3L 13B-MSP is a twin-rotor naturally aspirated Renesis rotary engine. All US-market RX-8 models used this engine throughout the 2004-2011 production run.
  • All RX-8 models are rear-wheel drive regardless of trim or suspension package.
  • OE shims are included with this pad per Hawk's fitment designation for OEM caliper applications on these vehicles.

Features

  • HPS 5.0 (High Performance Street 5.0) Ferro-Carbon compound - The next generation of Hawk's HPS formula, delivering greater stopping power, improved pedal feel, and enhanced fade resistance compared to standard HPS, while maintaining street-appropriate noise, dust, and rotor wear characteristics suited to the daily-driven RX-8.
  • Aggressive front brake torque with ABS compatibility - The HPS 5.0 compound is engineered to maximize front brake torque while staying within the ABS system's optimal engagement range, producing measurably shorter stopping distances without inducing front wheel lock or instability.
  • Improved pedal feel throughout the entire stroke - Delivers a progressive, consistent pedal response from initial contact through full brake application - a refinement that directly benefits the RX-8's driver-focused chassis, where brake feel and modulation play a key role in performance driving.
  • Effective from dead cold through elevated temperatures - Operates from 100°F through approximately 750°F (optimal: 100-550°F), providing improved front braking from the very first application of the day without requiring any warm-up cycle, and sustaining performance through the heat cycles typical of spirited canyon driving and track days.
  • Minimal fade under elevated temperatures - Withstands the sustained heat generated during back-to-back hard stops at autocross events, HPDE sessions, and track days at a level that OEM front pads on the RX-8 cannot consistently match before beginning to fade.
  • Gentle on front rotors with extended pad and rotor life - The Ferro-Carbon formulation is engineered to minimize abrasive wear on the RX-8's front disc surfaces, preserving OEM or aftermarket rotors through extended service intervals on a car frequently driven in a performance context.
  • Very quiet with low dust output - Engineered for near-silent street operation with minimal wheel contamination, maintaining the daily-driven character of the RX-8 without the noise and grime associated with more aggressive compounds.
  • Smooth and consistent brake release - Provides a clean, predictable front brake release that supports the RX-8's balanced rear-wheel-drive chassis, enabling precise trail-braking and stable corner entry without abrupt front-axle engagement.
  • 100% asbestos, lead, chromium, cadmium, and antimony free - Manufactured in an ISO-certified facility to strict quality and environmental standards.

Product Description

The Hawk HB470B.643 HPS 5.0 front brake pads are engineered for the front axle of the full 2004-2011 Mazda RX-8 lineup, covering every trim from the base model through the 40th Anniversary Edition, Shinka, Touring, Sport, Grand Touring, and R3 across both Standard and Sport Suspension configurations, all sharing the FMSI D1009 front caliper. The HPS 5.0 compound delivers a meaningful upgrade over OEM and standard street replacement pads in stopping power, pedal feel, and thermal durability - while retaining the low noise, manageable dust, and rotor-friendly characteristics that make it suitable for daily driving.

The RX-8 presents specific front brake demands that make the HPS 5.0 an appropriate choice. The 13B-MSP Renesis rotary engine's high-revving character and the car's nearly 50/50 weight distribution create a chassis that rewards precise, progressive front brake application - qualities that the HPS 5.0's smooth initial bite and consistent pedal feel deliver more precisely than OEM pads. On the street, the HPS 5.0 provides noticeably shorter stopping distances from the first cold stop of the day. At autocross events or HPDE sessions, it sustains consistent front brake performance through back-to-back runs where OEM pads begin to fade, without requiring a compound change between street driving and competition use.

This pad is for the front axle only. A separate rear pad is required for a complete front-and-rear brake upgrade. Compatible with iron and metal rotors only; carbon ceramic brake discs are not supported.
