  • 2011 BMW 1M Coupe (E82, RWD, 3.0L Turbocharged I6 N54) - Front Axle

Fitment Notes

  • Front axle fitment only - these shims are not designed or rated for rear caliper use
  • Designed for use with the ATE multi-piston front caliper as equipped on these BMW platforms
  • If the existing brake pad set includes OEM rubber-coated shims, those MUST be fully removed before installing titanium shims to avoid a pad over-thickness condition
  • Shims must sit completely flat against the pad backing plate with no gaps or debris between surfaces - any gap will result in a long pedal or brake sponginess
  • Compatible with all EBC brake pad compounds including Bluestuff NDX, Yellowstuff, Redstuff, RP-1, and RP-X, as well as OEM-style pads

Features

  • Laser-cut from aerospace-grade titanium sheet and precision perforated to reduce conductive heat transfer from the brake pad backing plate through to the caliper pistons and seals
  • Laboratory-tested to reduce heat transfer to the caliper by approximately 90°F (32°C) compared to standard rubber OEM shims - directly protecting caliper seals from heat-induced deterioration
  • Perforated design is critical: reduced surface contact area between shim and pad backing plate dramatically lowers conductive heat transfer compared to solid (non-perforated) titanium shims, which EBC's own lab testing confirmed as the superior solution
  • Prevents caliper seal damage - most caliper seals begin to deteriorate at temperatures above 220°C (400°F); the titanium shim acts as a thermal barrier keeping heat from reaching this threshold
  • Harder and dimensionally more stable than OEM rubber-coated shims, which can buckle and distort under high heat - titanium maintains its geometry under sustained track-level braking temperatures
  • Reusable at every brake pad change - shims can be transferred to the new pad set unless physically damaged, reducing long-term ownership cost
  • Reduces brake pedal sponginess compared to rubber shims by eliminating the compliance introduced by soft shim materials under load
  • Corrosion-resistant titanium construction ensures long service life even with regular exposure to water, road grime, and brake dust

Product Description

The EBC SH1449 is a set of four front titanium brake pad shims precision-engineered for the BMW M3 (E90/E92/E93) with the 4.0L V8 S65 engine, as well as the BMW 135i M Coupe and 1M Coupe (E82) - platforms where demanding road and track use puts severe thermal stress on the front brake system. The primary purpose of these shims is to act as a conductive heat barrier between the brake pad backing plate and the caliper pistons: without a thermal barrier, the intense heat generated during hard braking travels directly from the pad into the caliper, raising piston and seal temperatures to levels that accelerate seal wear, reduce hydraulic efficiency, and ultimately lead to brake fluid boil and pedal fade. Most caliper seals begin to degrade at sustained temperatures above 220°C (400°F) - a threshold that is easily reached during aggressive road driving or track use on these high-performance BMW platforms.

EBC's SH1449 shims are laser-cut from aerospace-grade titanium sheet and perforated in a precision pattern that dramatically reduces the contact surface area between shim and pad. This perforation is the key differentiator: EBC's own laboratory testing confirmed that perforated titanium shims reduce heat transfer to the caliper by approximately 90°F (32°C) compared to OEM rubber-coated shims - and significantly outperform solid (non-perforated) titanium shims by the same principle. Titanium is also inherently harder and dimensionally more stable than the rubber compounds used in stock shims, which can buckle and distort under sustained high temperatures, compromising pedal feel. The result is a firmer, more precise brake pedal, better-protected caliper seals, and more consistent braking performance across an extended session.

Installation is straightforward: any existing OEM rubber shims must be fully removed from the pad backing plates before fitting the titanium shims, as layering them creates a pad over-thickness condition. Once the rear of each pad is clean, the shims are pressed flat against the backing plate - one shim per pad, covering all four front pads in the axle set. The shims do not require adhesive and can be reused at every subsequent pad change unless they have been physically bent or damaged. For owners running EBC RP-1, RP-X, Bluestuff NDX, or Yellowstuff track compounds on these BMW platforms, the SH1449 titanium shims are a strongly recommended addition - they protect the caliper infrastructure that makes high-performance pad compounds effective, and they are a low-cost, long-life upgrade relative to the cost of caliper seal replacement or rebuilding.
