Vehicle Fitment

  • 1975-1978 Datsun 280Z (L28E 2.8L I6, RWD)
  • 1979-1980 Datsun/Nissan 280ZX (L28E 2.8L I6, Non-Turbo, RWD)

Fitment Notes

  • Single gasket - no left/right orientation; one gasket required per engine (inline 6-cylinder)
  • 89mm bore is an overbore diameter - stock bore for the L28/L28E is 86mm
  • NON-TURBO applications only - does not fit the L28ET turbocharged engine found in the 1981-1983 280ZX Turbo
  • Does not fit the earlier L24 or L26 engines found in the 240Z and 260Z
  • Does not fit the later VG30 V6 engines used in the 300ZX
  • The 280Z was sold as "Datsun" from 1975-1978; the 280ZX transitioned from the Datsun to Nissan badge during the 1979-1980 model years

Features

  • MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) construction with multiple embossed layers for maximum sealing performance
  • 3 layers of stainless steel for strength, rebound capability, and corrosion resistance
  • Viton (FKM) rubber-coated outer layers rated to 250°C (482°F) for harsh sealing environments
  • PTFE topcoat for improved fret resistance and enhanced cold-seal performance
  • Load-controlled embossments conform load distribution across the sealing surface, reducing bore distortion
  • No sealants or re-torquing required after installation
  • Ideal for the aluminum head-to-cast iron block configuration of the L28/L28E
  • Suitable for naturally aspirated, turbocharged, supercharged, and nitrous applications
  • Made in the USA at Cometic's facility in Concord, Ohio

Product Description

The Cometic C4580-045 is a high-performance MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) cylinder head gasket designed for the Nissan L28 and L28E 2.8-liter non-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine found in the 1975-1978 Datsun 280Z and 1979-1980 Datsun/Nissan 280ZX. With an 89mm overbore diameter and .045" compressed thickness across 3 layers of embossed stainless steel, this gasket delivers reliable sealing for performance builds running larger bore pistons. The Viton-coated outer layers with PTFE topcoat provide exceptional resistance to heat, chemicals, and fret in the L28's aluminum head-to-cast iron block configuration.

The Nissan L28 series engine is one of the most iconic Japanese inline-six powerplants ever produced, and it remains a popular platform for both restoration and high-performance builds decades after production. The 89mm bore on this gasket accommodates common overbore combinations used in stroker builds and displacement increases beyond the factory 2.8 liters. The .045" thickness is a versatile choice for builders fine-tuning compression ratio or compensating for moderate head and block resurfacing while maintaining strong combustion chamber sealing.

Installation requires clean, debris-free mating surfaces on both the cylinder head and engine block with a recommended surface finish of 50 RA or finer for proper gasket seal. Cometic MLS gaskets go on dry - no supplemental sealants should be applied. This gasket is designed for the non-turbo L28/L28E only. The L28ET turbocharged engine used in the 1981-1983 280ZX Turbo has a different head casting and requires a different Cometic gasket. The C4580 series is available in multiple thicknesses from .027" through .140" to accommodate a range of compression ratio and deck height requirements.
