Vehicle Fitment

  • 1995 BMW M3 (E36) - S50B30 3.0L Inline-6, Manual
  • 1995-1999 BMW M3 (E36) - S52B32 3.2L Inline-6, Manual
  • 2001-2006 BMW M3 (E46) - S54B32 3.2L Inline-6, Manual
  • 1998-2002 BMW Z3 M Roadster / Z3 M Coupe - S52B32 / S54B32 3.2L Inline-6, Manual

Fitment Notes

  • Designed for use with Clutch Masters FW-140-AL (aluminum) or FW-140-SF (steel) flywheel - not a standalone vehicle part; the FFL installs between the Clutch Masters flywheel and the crankshaft flange
  • Installed thickness: 0.006"-0.009" - does not significantly alter clutch assembly spacing or require additional shimming in normal fitment
  • Strongly recommended whenever installing a Clutch Masters FW-140-series flywheel, particularly in high-power or performance applications where flywheel fastener integrity is critical

Features

  • Nickel-coated steel substrate with partially embedded diamond particles - developed in partnership with 3M using their friction shim technology specifically engineered for flywheel applications
  • Diamond particles "bite" into both the flywheel and crankshaft flange surfaces, dramatically increasing friction and resistance to rotation between the mating surfaces
  • Prevents flywheel fretting and welding to the crankshaft if the flywheel fasteners come loose - eliminates one of the most catastrophic and costly failure modes in performance flywheel applications
  • Provides an extra layer of protection against crankshaft damage even if flywheel bolts back out under sustained high-load operation
  • Minimal installed thickness (0.006"-0.009") has no meaningful effect on assembly spacing or clutch engagement geometry
  • Easy installation - cut to shape or installed as a disc between mating surfaces at time of flywheel installation
  • Made in the USA by Clutch Masters since 1976

Product Description

The Clutch Masters CM-140-FFL is a Flywheel Friction Lock (FFL) - a precision-engineered protection shim designed to be installed between a Clutch Masters FW-140-series flywheel and the crankshaft flange on BMW E36 M3, E46 M3, and Z3 M applications. Developed in partnership with 3M using their friction shim technology, the FFL features a nickel-coated steel substrate with partially embedded diamond particles that physically grip both mating surfaces, dramatically increasing resistance to rotational movement between the flywheel and crank.

When a flywheel comes loose - whether from fastener fatigue, improper torque, or sustained high-load operation - it typically welds or frets itself to the crankshaft, causing damage that often renders the crankshaft unrepairable. The FFL's embedded diamond particles prevent this welding by maintaining friction even as clamping force from the flywheel bolts decreases, giving the driver time to detect the problem before catastrophic damage occurs. At only 0.006"-0.009" installed thickness, the FFL has no meaningful effect on clutch assembly spacing or geometry. It is a highly recommended addition to any FW-140-series flywheel installation, especially in high-performance or track-driven BMW builds.
