Vehicle Fitment

  • Ford-Cosworth BDA - 1.6L (1601cc) DOHC 16v Inline-4 (Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600, 1970-1974; homologation road engine)
  • Ford-Cosworth BDB - 1.7L (1701cc) DOHC 16v Inline-4 (Ford Escort RS1600 rally/race engine, 1970+)
  • Ford-Cosworth BDC - 1.7L (1701cc) DOHC 16v Inline-4 with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection (Ford Escort Group 2 rally engine, 1970+)
  • Ford-Cosworth BDD - 1.6L (1599cc) DOHC 16v Inline-4 (Formula Atlantic race engine, 1971+)

Fitment Notes

  • The BDA, BDB, BDC, and BDD all share the same Ford Kent iron cylinder block bottom end and identical crankshaft rod journal dimensions - a single rod bearing set fits all four variants at standard crankshaft size.
  • Standard (STD) crankshaft pin diameter - for unground, stock-diameter rod journals only. Undersize variants (.001, .010, .020) are available for lightly or significantly reground crankshafts.
  • An HX variant (4B1060HX-STD) is also available for builders requiring extra oil clearance at standard journal size.
  • Sold as a complete set of 8 bearing shells - sufficient for one full 4-cylinder engine build.
  • This bearing set is also referenced as compatible with other close BD-family variants (BDE, BDF, BDG, BDR, etc.) where rod journal dimensions match - verify crankpin diameter before ordering for non-BDA/B/C/D applications.

Features

  • Tri-metal construction: copper-lead alloy lining bonded over a hardened steel backing, with a high-strength overlay plate - engineered for the sustained high-RPM, high-load demands of race-prepared and rally BD-series engines.
  • Hardened steel backing improves structural support of the bearing lining and maintains crush under high sustained loads and temperatures.
  • High-strength overlay plate with reduced thickness provides improved fatigue resistance compared to standard OEM-spec bearings - critical in high-revving naturally aspirated and boosted BD builds.
  • Increased bearing crush and tighter wall tolerances ensure consistent, secure seating in the connecting rod housing bore.
  • Enlarged ID chamfers on bearing edges accommodate the larger crankshaft fillet radii found on performance and aftermarket BD-series crankshafts.
  • 3/4-groove design optimizes oil supply to the rod journal and maximizes load-carrying surface area across the bearing face.
  • Elimination of flash plating on the bearing back improves heat transfer and maximizes grip between the bearing shell and the rod bore.
  • Increased eccentricity compensates for bore distortion at high RPM and assists in the formation of a stable hydrodynamic oil film.

Product Description

The ACL Race Series 4B1060H-STD connecting rod bearing set is purpose-built for the Ford-Cosworth BD-series engine family - one of the most celebrated and widely raced four-cylinder engines in motorsport history. Developed by Cosworth Engineering from the Ford Kent iron block beginning in 1969, the BD series powered everything from the iconic Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 road car to Group 2 rally Escorts, Formula Atlantic single-seaters, and Formula 2 machines across the 1970s. Despite the variety of BD variants, the BDA, BDB, BDC, and BDD all share the same crankshaft rod journal dimensions, making this a single universal set for the four most common BD-series engines at standard crankshaft diameter.

Built on ACL's Race Series tri-metal platform - the same construction trusted in championship-winning engines from Formula 1 to NASCAR - these bearings offer meaningfully superior fatigue resistance, crush, and oil film stability compared to standard replacement shells. A foundational component for any BD-series engine rebuild, whether for road, rally, circuit, or formula racing. Undersize variants and the HX extra-clearance option are available separately. Sold as a complete set of 8 shells for one engine.
