Fitment Notes

  • RACING / PERFORMANCE USE ONLY - the NGK R7437-8 (4901) is a heat range 8 extra-cold racing plug; it is significantly colder than the OEM plug specification for all listed vehicles at stock power levels; running a plug that is too cold on a stock or mildly modified engine will cause fouling, rough idle, poor cold-start performance, and potential engine damage; this plug is intended for high-horsepower, high-boost, or track-driven applications where elevated combustion temperatures require a colder plug to prevent pre-ignition and detonation
  • Verify the correct heat range for your specific power level and tune before installing - as a general guideline for the EA888 Gen3 platform, the NGK 4901 (HR8) is commonly used in Stage 2+ and Stage 3 high-boost applications; Stage 1 tunes typically use a one-step-colder plug than OEM, while Stage 2+ often requires two steps colder or more depending on boost pressure and fuel type
  • Pre-gapped at 0.028" (0.7mm) from the factory - this is tighter than the OEM gap on many listed applications; high-boost forced-induction engines often require a tighter gap to prevent spark blow-out at elevated cylinder pressures; verify the gap against your specific tune's requirements and adjust before installation if necessary; do NOT widen the gap beyond your tune's specification
  • Sold individually - one (1) spark plug per listing; order the correct quantity for your engine's cylinder count (4 for EA888 Gen3 four-cylinder; 8 for EA824 V8)
  • Torque specification: aluminum cylinder heads 18-21.6 lb.ft - do not exceed this specification

Features

  • NGK Racing Series construction - the R7437-8 is part of NGK's Racing spark plug line, engineered specifically to withstand the severe mechanical and thermal shock associated with high-revving, high-compression, high-boost turbocharged performance engines; the Racing series uses tighter manufacturing tolerances, higher-grade materials, and more demanding quality control than NGK's standard or even Laser Iridium street plug lines; for EA888 Gen3 and EA824 TFSI applications running elevated boost on E85, race fuel, or aggressive ECU tunes, the Racing plug construction provides the mechanical integrity that street plugs cannot maintain under sustained high-output operation
  • Heat Range 8 - extra cold - in NGK's heat range numbering system, higher numbers indicate colder plugs; the R7437-8 at heat range 8 is substantially colder than the OEM specification for all listed VW and Audi applications; a colder plug dissipates combustion heat more rapidly into the cylinder head, keeping the firing end temperature lower and preventing the plug tip from reaching the temperature at which pre-ignition can occur; in high-boost, high-power applications the additional heat generated by compressed, enriched combustion charges makes a colder plug essential for safe, detonation-free operation
  • Fine wire iridium tipped center electrode - the iridium tip concentrates the spark into a smaller, more intense discharge point that improves ignitability and reduces the voltage required to fire the plug; in high-boost forced-induction applications where cylinder pressure is elevated and spark blow-out is a risk, the fine-wire iridium tip's superior ignitability ensures consistent ignition even under conditions where standard electrodes may misfire
  • Special insulator nose configuration for improved throttle response - the Racing series insulator nose geometry is optimized for the thermal and electrical demands of high-performance applications, providing faster throttle response and more consistent combustion events at wide-open throttle than conventional street plug insulator designs
  • Taper cut ground electrode - the angled taper cut on the ground electrode reduces quenching of the spark and improves flame propagation from the spark gap into the combustion chamber, contributing to more complete combustion at high-output conditions
  • Corrugated ribs on the insulator prevent flashover - maintains ignition integrity under the elevated electrical stress of high-energy ignition systems used on EA888 Gen3 and EA824 TFSI platforms with performance ignition coils or upgraded coil packs
  • Pure alumina silicate ceramic insulator - provides superior mechanical strength and better heat transfer than lower-grade ceramic materials; the insulator conducts combustion heat rapidly from the firing end to the plug shell and cylinder head, supporting the colder heat range characteristic of the R7437-8
  • Copper core aids in heat removal - the solid copper core provides excellent thermal conductivity, drawing heat away from the firing end and into the shell for rapid transfer to the cylinder head cooling system; critical for maintaining the firing end temperature within the correct operating range on high-output EA888 and EA824 applications
  • Triple seals prevent combustion gas leakage - three independent sealing points between the insulator and shell maintain compression integrity under the elevated cylinder pressures of high-boost turbocharged operation
  • 5,000 ohm resistance - suppresses radio frequency interference from the ignition system while maintaining sufficient voltage delivery to the spark gap

Product Description

The NGK 4901 (R7437-8) is NGK's heat range 8 extra-cold Racing spark plug for the Volkswagen EA888 Gen3 turbocharged four-cylinder and Audi EA824/EA855 TFSI platforms - covering the Golf VII GTI and R, Jetta GLI, Passat, Beetle, and Alltrack on the four-cylinder side, and the Audi RS7, S6, S8, A8 4.0T V8 and TT RS 2.5T five-cylinder on the Audi side. The R7437-8 is a purpose-built racing plug rather than a street replacement - its heat range 8 cold specification is substantially colder than the OEM plug for all listed applications and is intended for high-boost, high-horsepower, or track-driven builds where elevated combustion temperatures require a colder plug to prevent pre-ignition and detonation at wide-open throttle.

On the EA888 Gen3 platform the NGK 4901 is one of the most widely specified plugs among the ECU tuning community for Stage 2+ and Stage 3 high-boost applications, including those running E30, E85, or race fuel blends where the combination of elevated boost pressure, aggressive ignition timing, and enriched combustion increases the risk of plug tip overheating on the warmer OEM-range plugs. The tighter 0.028" pre-set gap addresses spark blow-out at elevated cylinder pressures, while the fine-wire iridium center electrode ensures consistent ignition events even under the conditions where conventional electrodes may misfire. The Racing series construction - tighter manufacturing tolerances, special insulator nose geometry, taper-cut ground electrode, and triple seals - provides the mechanical integrity required for sustained high-output operation that street plugs are not designed to maintain.

This plug is NOT appropriate for stock or mildly modified engines at street power levels - running a plug that is too cold will cause fouling and rough idle. Confirm the correct heat range for your specific power level, boost pressure, and fuel type with your tuner before installation. Gap to your tune's specification before installation; do not exceed the aluminum head torque specification of 18-21.6 lb.ft. Sold individually - order 4 for EA888 four-cylinder or 8 for EA824 V8 applications.
